“What is meant to be will be…” is a line from Everything is Everything by Lauryn Hill.
Weird how lyrics in a song or quotes shared on the internet sometimes seem so relatable to what you are going through. Ever wonder why and how that is possible? Or do you just accept it as coincidental? Believe what you’d like, but I believe nothing happens coincidently. As mentioned in “Clearly I ain’t“, God is the author of our lives and has great plans for us. Whatever you see or hear, that moves you, is actually a sign from him.
In 2014, I launched StyleByLoren and was so sure that whatever I set my heart to, I will accomplish. Did I though? Yes I did, but only after I let God do most of the work and stop trying to control everything. As much as I hated having to go back into retail work and selling the beautiful clothing I wish I made or owned. I realised that I needed to understand what it means to run a business. Being under the wing of a boss who, just like me had a dream and vision, helped me understand that running a business is not as easy as it seems. And even though I launched my company, I wasn’t ready to run it and had to take a chill pill.
“Don’t worry about your career, or studying. You will be successful! Just use the next few years to learn as much as you can.”
The words above was spoken over me the day I got baptised, in 2011. After being fuelled by that assurance, I went wild and literally chased after the career I was promised. Now, that may be admirable, but hunny, it was reckless and immature! What I should have done then was continue doing what I was doing and trust that God will open doors, but instead, I booked my ticket to Johannesburg to pursue a career in fashion. Just over 3 months, I moved back to the Mother City!
My modelling bookers at the time asked me what they could do in order for me to stay, I replied, “get me styling work and the I will stay”. They knew, more than anything else, I wanted this. Both my bookers were/are strong business minded yet passionate women. They made a deal with me, a deal that started my career as a fashion stylist.
Many doors opened and some just remained closed. Those that opened helped shape the direction in which I was meant to go. However, thinking I knew enough I needed to, I went ahead and did my own thing, only to end up where I said I never want to return to again. RETAIL! As mentioned above, I had to learn what it meant to run a business.
What is meant to be will be…
It is 2017, and I can finally say that I know what I am meant to be doing. Perseverance has helped me mature. And my faith has helped me believe even when believing seemed impossible.
Nothing you are facing has not been someone else’s challenge too. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. No-one is going to know you need assistance, if you don’t ask!
I am going to leave you with this…
“Take the old prophets as your mentors. They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God. What a gift life is to those who stay the course! You’ve heard, of course, of Job’s staying power, and you know how God brought it all together for him at the end. That’s because God cares, cares right down to the last detail.”
